Why are you living Japan?
I applied for the JET Programme and got accepted to work as an assistant language teacher in Japan. Ever since my husband and I honeymooned there in 2008, it has been a dream of ours to live there and experience more of the culture. I'm also fascinated with the Japanese school systems and how they work.
Where are you specifically located in Japan?
I'm in Kyoto Prefecture. Most people only think of Kyoto City, but the prefecture is actually quite large and divided by mountains. I'm in the northern part, very close to the Sea of Japan.
Is your husband in Japan with you?
What does your husband do?
He is working on his MBA and working through correspondence with contacts from his previous job.
How were you and your husband able to put your careers and life on hold to do this?
Both of us had hit a wall in our careers and needed a change. We also got extremely lucky and managed to sell our house, despite the bad economy.
How much Japanese do you know?
I'm humble enough to admit that I don't know much, but am very eager to learn. Japanese was not offered at my high school or university, and now is definitely the time to immerse myself in the language. Currently I have beginner's texts and hope to work my way up from there.
What did you put in your Statement of Purpose? Will you post it here?
I do not plan to post my SoP publically for fear of plagiarism. Everyone's SoP is different anyway, and mine focused on how I got interested in Japan through music and films. From there, I talked about my experiences traveling there, and finally tied it in with my career field and what I can bring to the program, along with what I hope to get out of participating. A friend of mine gave me the valuable advice of using specific examples, and that's what I did.
What happens to your pets?
They will be staying with my husband's parents in a very nurturing home.
What are your credentials?
B.A. in Early Childhood Education, Certified Teacher for Preschool-5th grade, 4 years of professional, lead-teaching experience with Preschool and Pre-K classrooms. And I'm genki!
